Finding the right water tank capacity is not guesswork—it is a simple calculation that saves you from running dry or dealing with stale, foul-smelling water. Here is a practical approach to sizing your FRP water tank.

Step 1: Calculate Your Daily Water Demand

Start with your actual consumption figures. Residential and industrial needs are very different.

For a villa, estimate approximately 150 to 250 liters per person per day. A family of five typically consumes around 1,000 liters daily.

For a factory, consider both staff consumption (around 40–60 liters per employee) and process water requirements. Industrial usage varies significantly, so reviewing historical utility bills or consulting with process engineers is advisable.

Step 2: Build in a Buffer for Reliability

Water supply interruptions are common. Power outages, seasonal demand spikes, or delivery delays can disrupt your supply. To safeguard against this, multiply your daily usage by the number of storage days you want as a backup.

The core formula: Daily Demand × Storage Days = Required Base Capacity.

For areas with intermittent supply, a 2- to 5-day reserve is recommended. Add a contingency margin of 30–40% to cover emergencies or unexpectedly high usage.

Example: A factory with 12 m3/day demand and 5 days of storage needs 60 m3 base, plus 40% contingency, totaling 84 m3.

Step 3: Match the Tank to Your Available Space

Modular FRP tanks can be configured horizontally or vertically to fit rooftops, courtyards, or tight industrial corners. But remember the physics: water weighs 1 ton per cubic meter. A 20,000-liter tank adds 20 tons of load. Ensure your foundation or roof slab can support that weight—especially for tall tanks where bottom panels face higher hydrostatic pressure and require thicker laminates.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Oversizing leads to stagnation: A 20 m3 tank holding only 1 m3 of daily usage sits idle for weeks. In hot climates, this breeds biofilm and odors. Size your tank to match actual consumption.

  • Ignoring maintenance access: Tanks need cleaning at least every 6 months. Include manholes and clearance space in your design.

  • Confusing fire water with potable storage: These have different design rules. Keep them separate unless local codes explicitly permit combined use.

  • Guessing instead of calculating: Never rely on "that villa used 10 m3." Use actual occupancy and consumption data.
